Biography

Kristin Stokes Neusel focuses her practice on representing individual and business clients in civil and criminal tax controversies and litigation.

Kristin previously worked as an associate attorney at a large, Chicago-based law firm. Kristin gained valuable experience advocating for clients before state and federal administrative agencies. While handling cases such as wage and hour claims, discrimination complaints, and unfair labor practice charges, Kristin honed her research, writing, and litigation skills and learned to navigate complex legal issues and government bureaucracy.

As a law student at Washington University, Kristin served as a judicial extern for Magistrate Judge Noelle Collins of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. In this role Kristin prepared legal memoranda and drafted orders in matters pending before the Court. Kristin’s externship also provided her the opportunity to observe civil and criminal hearings and jury trials before the District Court, as well as oral arguments before the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

During law school, Kristin excelled in a wide range of tax courses including classes focusing on federal income, corporate, and partnership taxation, and criminal tax fraud investigations and prosecutions. She also participated in the WUSTL Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, learning first-hand how tax problems can create substantial stress for clients due to the complexity of the tax law and the fear many people have when dealing with the IRS. She enjoyed that experience and her ability to help clients who could not afford legal counsel resolve their cases and get into compliance with their filing and payment obligations. Kristin assisted clients in negotiating installment agreements and Offers in Compromise, and in obtaining penalty relief.

Both before and while in law school, Kristin worked as the general manager of a local tap house. She oversaw all aspects of the daily operations of the business including personnel matters, purchasing, and maintaining state and local licenses and permits. Kristin’s experience in managing a small business gives her insight into the business operations of NSB’s clients and helps her to more effectively represent them in their federal and state tax disputes.
